"inverting gives the heart a break" → yogajournal.com

Yoga Journal article, Everybody Upside-Down

If you are new to yoga, take your time before inverting—a year is not too long. Work closely with an observant and knowledgeable teacher. Attend class regularly. Learn the fundamentals: Find the extension of the spine first in Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog); open the shoulders with Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand), Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Balance), and Vasisthasana (Pose Dedicated to the Sage Vasistha); and develop balance, clarity, and strength with the standing poses.

“Come back to center, that place in you that is still, calm, quiet, and connected. Your center is a place you can trust. It connects the body, mind, heart, and soul. It connects your truth and your inner voice. Your insights, awarenesses, and guidance come from being there, at that place. Your center is a place that is quietly confident, unassuming, spontaneous, and free. It is accepting, nonjudgmental, and channels the voice of your heart. It knows perfect timing. If you must leave your center to learn a lesson, feel a feeling, or experience something new, do that. Take all the side trips you are called to, but come back to center when you’re done.” —Melody Beattie on following your gut, Journey to the Heart

“You can’t control love. It’s impossible. It’s like screaming and screeching and begging a rose to unfold faster, better, or differently. Love is an energy- an active, living force that runs its threads through all of life, through all of the universe. We can awaken our souls and see that all these experiences have been lessons of love. Learning courage, faith, patience. Learning to love ourselves, when it looked and felt as if no one else did. Learning to express our creativity, express our emotions, and experience joy. We don’t lead love; it leads and guides us.” —Melody Beattie on love, Journey to the Heart

Maharishi pointed his disciples in the direction of Self-realization via the simple question “who am I,” which is unveiled as we discover who we are not.

I am not my body

I am not my family

I am not my history

I am not my profession

I am not my possessions

I am not my story

I am not my religion

I am not my condition

I am not my circumstance

Etc. etc…

As layer after layer of falsity fall away, Truth is revealed. In this courageous unveiling of who we are not, we then discover the essence of who we are.

if you've never gone to bikram yoga

- it’s a 90 minute class of hot therefore …

- you should bring a towel (like a yogitoes or something else that covers the bulk of your mat) and a bottle of water

i would even hydrate about an hour before going into the class

- dress accordingly! if you don’t mind sweating in cotton, then by all means …

you know its going to be a good time when the instructor says, forget the poses, you should at least try to just stay in the room for the duration of the class.

bikram isnt for everyone but you never know! try it out!
